Rechargeable Battery Recycling Expands -- Disposable Battery Recycling Ends August 15

Recycling of disposable batteries will soon end in Meridian and a regional effort to promote rechargeable batteries will soon begin.  Ingham County, where Meridian has previously taken batteries, will cease recycling of disposable batteries.   The availability of rechargeables is one reason.   These are far more cost-effective and environmentally-friendly in most instances.  At  $.75/pound, the cost of recycling disposables is high, not including related costs, time, and other resources consumed in...

  1. hauling to a recycling drop-off site

  2. hauling again to a central recycling storage area

  3. hauling again to the County

  4. hauling again to the processing facility

  5. >10 times and packaging/waste

See a flyer here for the latest information and places to recycle rechargeables.  If your organization would you like to help promote the use and recycling of rechargeable batteries, visit www.call2recycle.org.   You may also see a list of the new locations at www.capitalareagreenmap.org

"When asked if I am pessimistic or optimistic about the future, my answer is always the same: If you look at the science about what is happening on earth and aren’t pessimistic, you don’t understand data.  But if you meet the people who are working to restore this earth and the lives of the poor, and you aren’t optimistic, you haven’t got a pulse."

- Paul Hawken
